Renaissance art is often held in higher esteem than other periods of art because artists who painted and made work during that time represented light in a new and different way. Dutch artists used natural lighting and were true to tone and color with their work and tried to work in a realistic style. Paintings from this time also had a lot of depth, including mirrored images, shadows, and pictures within pictures. Almost everything in these works seems to be symbolic which means there is a lot of imagery to be seen. Work of the Renaissance period was also very religious, depicting Mary the Virgin, and many of the saints. Architecture is also particularly popular because much of it is still intact today and can be seen by anyone who can travel to it.

ReplyDeleteI like that you mentioned Northern Renaissance artists. These artists are extremely interested in realism, naturalism, and illusionism (depth). One of my favorite Northern artists in Jan van Eyck. We'll be talking about these Northern artists really soon - stay tuned!
